Dato: 20. december 1870
Fra: H.C. Andersen   Til: Horace E. Scudder
Sprog: dansk, engelsk.

Copenhagen, December 20, 1870.

Dear and excellent friend:

Thank you for your most recent welcome and informative letter I Thanks for the honorarium check that came with it; I have cashed the same. Now I am longing eagerly to see the copies of the published Writings that were vouchsafed me. You will recall that I have as yet only received the first three volumes. It was not entirely clear to me from your letter whether you had received the entire story about Lucky Peer. If it had not happened when you wrote the letter, then I will hope that you have received the missing sheets later. If they have not arrived, then I ask you please to let me know by return post, so that the book may be sent to you at once. The Danish original is having a great sale. Reitzel has printed 5500 copies, a remarkable edition for our little country. I have been met with much appreciation for that little book. Two of the first reviews. of it in our daily press I sent you some days ago under separate cover. I enclosed with it an issue of Illustrated Times in which Thorvaldsen' some hundredth anniversary is mentioned, and which presents two portraits of the great sculptor.

I am sorry to see The Riverside Magazine cease publication. I have become so accustomed by now to look upon it as an old friend who took my little children in his affectionate embrace. By the bye, I have enjoyed looking at Scribner’s Monthly lllustrated Magazine, and as it has such a wealth of pictures, I am looking forward to seeing Lucky Peer having some, too. I have every confidence in the monthly publication as well as in its esteemed editor. I know that you, dear friend, are acting in the best interests of myself and of my authorship. For this I cannot thank you enough. Before I received from you a copy of Scribner's Magazine, I had already received a copy of the same issue, presumably sent me by the publisher. Kindly thank him for this friendly attention.

I have turned over to Reitzel the draft in advance payment for books, and we talked over at the time the matter of their choice. We agreed meantime that I should indicate which books we would recommend, and then wait to hear if these were known to you or not. Blicher's short stories (Noveller) in eight volumes are of great interest. The Alchemist by Hauch (a book already several years old, now published anew). Is the Danish author Goldschmid known to you? Have the works of the Norwegian author Munch reached you? I think I may especially recommend a work by a young and able author, P. Hansen." He has brought out in fascicles (the concluding twenty-first fascicle has just appeared in these days) a &Scandinavian anthology entitled Northern Authors of Our Century. Here you get a short and good biographical sketch of each, with a portrait and a judicious selection from his writings, in verse as well as prose. I recommend this work strongly; it is written in good taste and with full knowledge. From this you will be able to decide later which of the works pointed out you wish to receive. Let me know which you wish of the abovementioned. I agreed with Reitzel that Illustrated Times would be sent you beginning with the new year; he promised to speak to the publisher about it. It is a well edited paper with copious materials and good pictures. Of Danish papers I may recommend Dagbladet.

This letter of mine will probably not reach you until the new year has begun. Thank you for your friendship in the past. Thank you for your sympathy; you will continue it in the new year, whatever that year may bring. The year that is now closing was bloody and terrible. May God permit his sunshine to cast its light over lands and men! May he give us peace and its blessings. Christmas and New Year' s greetings to you and all your dear ones. To my esteemed publishers you will please extend a similar greeting. And from you yourself I shall very soon have the pleasure of a letter and instructions, with good news also about Lucky Peer. your heartily devoted

Kjære, fortræffelige Ven! Tak for Deres seneste velkomne indholdsrige Brev!

Deres hjerteligt hengivne.

HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN
