Bregentved, Denmark, July 24, 1874.

Dear and excellent friend:

A considerable time has already gone by since you received a letter from me, but it is only now with the coming of summer and after I have spent several weeks in the country, that I am . really feeling well. lam, praise God, almost restored in health and back in my good old familiar mood. M y strength is increasing daily. For eighteen long months I was, as you know, very ill; it was even doubtful whether I could live through it. But now it is quite different! The sweetness of nature in the forest, the warm sunshine, and all the sympathy and attention which have been bestowed on me, have been the best kind of medicine for me.

At Pentecost time, in the company of a friend, as I was then still unable to take care of myself properly, I went out to the titled family of Holstein-Holsteinborg, whose comfortable old castle, surrounded by forests, lies near the Baltic, and opposite the little island of Glenö, about which you will recall that I wrote a story "Veno and Glenö" On my arrival there I was still so weak that it was only with difficulty that I could go down the steps and out into the garden. But soon strength and confidence returned, so that I could walk about alone in the park and along the strand. In the company of the noble, lovable people whose guest I was, time flew quickly by.

Now I am several [Danish] miles from there, on one of Denmark's richest and largest country estates. I am staying at Bregentved, with the family of Count Moltke, where I meet with the same hearty and sympathetic hospitality as I enjoyed at Holsteinborg. To be sure, I am not near the open sea here, but there is a magnificent park here with small inland lakes on which the swans swim about and where the lotus flowers grow in the water. Here are endlessly long paths between the rows of linden trees, with lovely roses in full bloom.

I enjoy it here immensely, but for more than a year and a half no composition of mine has found Us way to paper. I felt no urge in that direction, I gave it no thought, my mind was solely concerned with that great bourn of eternity to which I expected God to call me at any moment. Now I am again feeling hale of body, so that I may still have some years of life before me. It may even be granted me to put still more fairy tales and stories on paper. If this takes place, I shall certainly send these, my fust new compositions, to you.

Thank you for the interesting magazines you sent met Thank you for your faithful sympathy and for your thought of mel To my esteemed publishers of the Collected Writings I wish you also to bring my greetings and thanks. They will not forget to send me a few free copies of The Story of My Life as soon as a new edition is out. Through these gentlemen and through you, my noble friend, I have a visible sign that on the other side of the ocean more thought is given than was earlier the case to the happiness and requirements of an author.

I must say that I am getting on excellently in my declining years! I know no want_ and I have the greatest appreciation and sympathy from my own country I Greet your lovely young wife from me! Let me have the pleasure of a letter soon a warm ray of sunlight from your heart and your country. In mid-August I shall be back in Copenhagen.

your sincerely devoted

HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN

Deres inderligt hengivne,

HANS CHRISTIAN. ANDERSEN
