Dear Sir,

I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your obliging letter of the 10th inst. and feel much gratified at the idea of being still more connected with your literary career in the English translation of your works.

Mrs Howitt no doubt gave an elegant version of The Improvisatore; how far it has been literally correct is another question, for as you justly observe a work must suffer somewhat in being again translated from a foreign language to the author's.

With regard to a republication of your previous works there might be some question as to the commercial prudence of such a step; and I think there would be, with me certainly. But as to any future production from your pen, I should have pleasure in placing at your disposal for an English translation ready for the press, to appear simultaneously with the original Danish work, for an ordinary volume of 320 pages similar to the enclosed £50, or £150 for a work of 3 vols. past 800. This consideration to include the cost of translation. This, of course, for a new work by you which has never appeared, either in Danish or German.

In common with all who appreciate your genius, I shall welcome you on your proposed visit to our land, where your farne will have long preceded you.

I am glad you like the appearance of my Edition of A Poet's Bazaar.

With sincere admiration I remain, my dear Sir, Yours faithfully,

Richard Bentley.
