British Museum, London. March 31st, 1875.

Dear and honoured Friend, The second of next month is your 70th birthday, is it not? Will you accept my congratulations and warmest wishes? It is a matter of great thankfulness to your friends all over the world that your life has been spared, in spite of so much bodily weakness and suffering, to enter an 8th decade. May it bring, with all other blessings, health, happiness and good days.

On the 2nd you will be elected an Honorary Member of the British Scandinavian Society, just instituted, and all your friends here will remember you with affectionate gratitude.

I have to tell you that I am betrothed to a young lady, Miss Nellie Epps, who is a rising artist amongst us. We hope to be married in the summer. How happy should we be, if you would honour us some day by a visit.

In the meantime, believe me, dear and honoured Friend, to be

Yours devotedly,

Edmund W. Gosse
