My dear honoured Friend,

Indeed I cannot say that I have not heard from you, for 'The Haunted Man' has brought me greetings, and all the other old friends, Oliver Twist, the Cricket etc. etc., bid me 'good morning and good evening', but none of them can assure me: Dickens still thinks of thee with the same warmth of heart-neither art thou forgotten of his wife and children. This little note comes as a reminder. Last year I sent you 'two Baronesses', but they arrived, to be sure, without a letter, brought only greetings and a handshake.- These are sad and serious times in my poor native country. May Our Lord let his light soon shine in upon many afflicted hearts here.-

Hold me friendly in your thoughts; you are as good as daily in mine. I Your heart- felt, devoted, great and extremely admiring

Hans Christian Andersen

P.S. I shall probably go to Stockholm in about three weeks, and perhaps to Finland to see the sun at midnight.
