On the occasion of the bicentenary of Hans Christian Andersen's birth, the Hans Christian Andersen Center at the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, hosted the Fourth International Hans Christian Andersen Conference.

The program is available at andersen.sdu.dk/forskning/konference/program2005_e.html.
The list of papers with abstracts is available as well.
The papers are available in Hans Christian Andersen Between Children's Literature and Adult Literature.

The theme of the conference was:

Hans Christian Andersen between children's literature and adult literature

[The following was written before the conference was held:]

Earlier conferences have almost exclusively focused on Hans Christian Andersen as a writer for grown-ups, but on the occasion of his bicentenary we also want to include the aspect which is the foundation of his world fame, that is his place within children's literature. Consequently Torben Weinreich, professor of children's literature at The Danish University of Education, Copenhagen, will take part in the preparation and organization of the conference in addition to the traditional partners of the Center, Aage Jørgensen, Maarslet near Aarhus, lecturer and Hans Christian Andersen bibliographer, and Dr. Viggo Hjørnager Pedersen, Copenhagen University, a specialist in the English translations of Hans Christian Andersen.

The conference will take place at the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, 1 to 5 August 2005 (arriving Odense Sunday 31 July and leaving Saturday 6 August).

In addition to a number of plenaries, the conference will offer contributions within a number of sections devoted to various aspects covered by the general double theme.

There will probably be a number of cultural and social events in connection with the conference.

Registration of participation

The deadline for final registration has been extended until 28. April 2005. The registration is now completely closed.

The conference fee was DKK 1,500 - (DKK 750 for students).

Proposals for papers, that cannot be fitted into the very tight schedule, but which are approved by the organizers, may be presented as posters. It is possible to participate without giving a paper.

Call for papers

We call for papers on both aspects of Andersen's production, separately, in their dialectic interplay or in their possible conflict, historically or in a modern perspective. We expect papers covering a wide range of scholarly research: linguistic or literary papers, as well as investigations of cultural history, media or other aspects relevant for a discussion of Andersen's work.

We ask you to send a brief summary (6-10 lines) on your suggested paper to the center before 28 April. The conference board will then review all suggested papers and announce the speakers and groups that are to be held based on the papers.

Especially we would like to provoke a discussion of Andersen's position now and in the future as children's literature and/or as adult literature - in a Danish perspective and in the perspective of the foreign nations/cultures/ bookmarkets represented by the participants in the conference.
