Mayken González Backlund, a painter from Funen has made a wide range of illustrations from the Fairytales by H.C. Andersen. She is inspired by literature, especially by fairytales, ancient myths and tales from ancient China and Japan. The tradition in Asian visual arts and her partly Spanish background is clearly visible in her mode of illustrating the H.C. Andersen fairytales.

The drawings are made in Japanese ink and are in bright colours to which are added touches of gold and silver.

Mayken has exhibited at the City Hall in Odense, at “The Tinderbox” (an arts centre for children in Odense) and furthermore at galleries and art societies. In 2003 she participated in the cultural festival, “Images of Asia” in Odense.

Mayken González Backlund was born in 1961. She has a B.A. in Literature and has also studied Stage Design at the Theatre School in Barcelona, Spain. Today she works full time as a painter and illustrator.
