The book consists of litterary pictures or images, short prose, prose scetches or whatever you want to call it. hans Christian Andersen has pushed the lines of the fairy tale genre so far that it is natural to categorize each of the Picture Book's texts, the socalled "evenings", as Andersenian fairy tales or stories and accordingly Picture Book without Pictures as a fairy tale collection.
The survey is also unusual, because it includes the two English collections, which contained first publishings of fairy tales: A Christmas Greeting to my English Friends (1847) and A Poet's Day Dreams (1853).
