Description of this motif: The nix, or 'nixie' is, according to folklore, a supernatural vreature, that lives in streams, lakes and torrents, and attracts humans with music. May assume the form of a man or a horse, cf. Flemming Hovmann's comment in vol. 7 of H.C. Andersens eventyr, Dansk Sprog- og Litteraturselskab / Borgen 1990, p. 101. The nix is closely related to the man of the stream and people of the sea.
