The selection of fairy tales contains both fairy tales and stories. The label "stories" refers in the oeuvre of Hans Christian Andersen a movement towards a much more experimental and, in some cases, more realistic style – primarily for adult readers. As one can see in the chronological list of fairy tale collections, the label "told for children" (fortalte for Børn) disappears after the first 6 booklets, and in 1852 came, after a series of "New fairy tales" (Nye Eventyr) and Picturebook Without Pictures, the first collection of "stories" (Historier).

This selection contains a lot more texts than the 156, Andersen published as fairy tales and stories. Read more about the selection in the FAQ.
